Fictitious Album Cover 13

Description

This is another album cover for my fictitious Christian rock band Transept.  I had gotten the idea for it a long time ago, but only this week did I have all the pieces needed to actually put it together.

The name is a portmanteau of sorts, as the word "stained" can apply to either "blood" or "glass."  (In fact, at one time I had contemplated making the album title one continuous word without spaces, to leave people to interpret it howevery they wanted.)  With this album name, it was essential that I feature a stained-glass image of Jesus Christ crucified.  This is a photo I had taken myself, of one of six stained glass windows in my church's sanctuary depicting the life of Christ.  However, for me to capture this window in such brilliant glory required me waiting for a day and time when the sanctuary was dark and the sun outside shined in at the right angle, as it was setting.  I had tinted the photo red in post-processing to match the blood motif of this album.

If the layout of this cover looks familiar, I had used a similar arrangement on Album Cover 4, but when I started on this, I wasn't aiming to replicate that.  I had taken three variants of source photo -- one with the window centered, and then one off-center either left or right -- to have a choice of how I wanted to arrange my text.  In the end, I stuck with the centered photo and used the text as a reveal mask.

I had originally put a much darker red overlay on the stained glass photograph, but after looking at it on a different day, I felt like it was a little too heavy on the red, and found this (which used a different blending mode of red overlay) to be a bit easier on the eyes.  I've put the alternate version in my Stash, because I had a hard time deciding which one of these I wanted to keep: sta.sh/012uw76qchjm

The nice thing about this one is that it keeps the red hue, but just varies the lightness of the color in places to break it up a little and make it easier on the eyes. Not to mention, when I think of stained glass, I think of many different colors and other varying things. Even though this one is still completely red, the variations make it appear more like stained glass than the alternate version. Both are very good, but I feel this one probably has some nuances that make it a wee bit more successful. In my opinion anyway.

I actually adore the idea and image. The first thing I thought earlier when I had pulled it up on my phone (as opposed to computer which I'm on now) was just "Wow. That looks cool." And I know there is deeper meaning behind it, of course, with the imagery. But my first reaction really was how neat it looks. The fact that the words to read are also an image of the stained glass depiction of Jesus Christ really makes a lot of interesting shapes and information for the eye to look at.

I like how the words both imply "blood stained" and "stained glass", that's clever.

All in all, I really like this. It's simple but it's complex and it's quite clever.
