I came up with the idea for this one rather spontaneously, actually. It was about a week ago that I got the idea while I was at work. The original title was going to be "Do Not Adjust Your Record Player" and have the text on an LP record label, but the lack of available record players made me re-think my strategy. That's when I came up with this.
Both the title and the appearance of the work are derived from old-fashioned TV. The basis of the image that appears on the screen is a standard TV test pattern, and the phrase "Do not adjust your set" may sound familiar to some viewers.
After creating the image in Photoshop (and you can see a larger, watermarked version of that image here
), I uploaded it to my MP3 player (an iPod Classic 4G, second edition) and displayed it on screen while I took a photo of it. It took me about 10 tries to get a good working photo, because glare kept appearing on screen and hiding the desired image. I then applied a series of filters on the photo to darken most of it and make the screen appear to glow.
