Fictitious Album Cover 7 by mjponso Fictitious Album Cover 7 by mjponso
I came up with the idea for this one rather spontaneously, actually. It was about a week ago that I got the idea while I was at work. The original title was going to be "Do Not Adjust Your Record Player" and have the text on an LP record label, but the lack of available record players made me re-think my strategy. That's when I came up with this.

Both the title and the appearance of the work are derived from old-fashioned TV. The basis of the image that appears on the screen is a standard TV test pattern, and the phrase "Do not adjust your set" may sound familiar to some viewers.

After creating the image in Photoshop (and you can see a larger, watermarked version of that image here), I uploaded it to my MP3 player (an iPod Classic 4G, second edition) and displayed it on screen while I took a photo of it. It took me about 10 tries to get a good working photo, because glare kept appearing on screen and hiding the desired image. I then applied a series of filters on the photo to darken most of it and make the screen appear to glow.

Thanks. :) Getting that artificial glow effect was a bugger to make.

Thanks. =) Is this your favorite of my album covers?

iPods do have equalizer settings on them, if you're seriously asking.

I don't understand. You think I would be offended/hurt if you were being sincere? Or are you being sarcastic?

fucking with PS filters and funky fonts is one thing, it's fun you make psychedelik artworks and designs with it but you shouldn't forget the basics of composition and aesthetics. inspiration is also an important thing. without anything nothing fuels the imagination. that's my point of view.

so if you still have some CD/discs around, look at the cover and how it's designed. get inspired, spot what makes it nice and how you can do something like that.

That does make sense. And I in fact have gotten some inspiration from real album covers -- album cover 4, for instance, was inspired by a MercyMe album cover.

Cool.

What drew me to this primarily was the vivid screen. Even with its flaws (what looks like dust or smudge on the bottom of the screen) just makes it all the more mesmerizing.

This is probably my favorite of your mock-up album covers. I just kind of like the feel of it. Mixing new technology with old nostalgia is very neat. I applaud it!
