<Amy's POV>
I was listening to all of this conversation going on, when suddenly I felt myself moving again.  Out of nowhere, I suddenly had feelings of vertigo and I swear I could hear the sound of rushing wind outside the canister, but I didn't feel like I was going very fast.  What is going on here?  I remember Eggman saying something about taking me somewhere Sonic could never follow...what did he mean by that?  But before I could think about it any further, the odd sensation vanished as quickly as it appeared.

Once I regained my senses, I listened carefully for any sounds that might clue me in about where I was now.  All was quiet for a few minutes, but I soon started to hear a lot of different muffled voices.  Lots of people means I'm probably in a city...maybe Station Square?  But surely Sonic would find me here...  I kept pondering where I might be as I heard the voices grow louder and louder.  Then suddenly I felt a jolt, like I'd suddenly landed on something hard.  By now I had my every nerve tuned to any sounds or movement from outside.  Robotnik's booming voice was what I heard next.  I could only make out a couple words he said, but his triumphant tone of voice was unmistakeable.  Jeez, Robotnik, it's only been a few minutes and already you're gloating?  The muffled voices grew even louder and started to become rhythmic, like they were chanting, which puzzled me.  But I knew that whatever it was, it couldn't possibly be good news for me, so I stood on alert, ready for anything that might happen next.

That's when the canister was suddenly lifted and started moving.  But it wasn't a smooth motion, as if people were picking up the canister instead of a machine.  I began to fear that the canister was being carried off to be crushed, incinerated, or otherwise destroyed.  I couldn't stand silent any more.  I began banging feverishly on the sides of the canister, yelling to be let out.  That's when the movement stopped and I was set down again, and the canister suddenly opened from the outside.  My eyes having become adjusted to the near-complete darkness of the canister, the light was blinding on my face, and I squinted to see anything I recognized.  All I could see was a blurry figure at first, but slowly, the form of an echidna came into view.  "Knuckles, is that you?" were the first words out of my mouth, but he didn't respond.  Then I could see other echidnas standing beside him, which puzzled me further because I didn't know of any other echidnas besides Knuckles.  The one I thought was Knuckles turned his head and asked someone I couldn't see what he should do, in a thick accent that didn't sound like Knuckles at all.  I could clearly hear Robotnik's response now: "That is what I do to people who disobey me.  Do you want to be next?  Now close it and take it somewhere secure."  With that, the lid was closed again and I was carried off to places unknown.

Once I was set down again, some time later, I banged on the can again to be let out, but the only sound I could hear was the clip-clop of feet walking away, which made me think that the floor was made of something hard like stone or wood.  Now where am I? I asked myself.  The reality of the situation began to set in.  I'm in some unknown place, with unknown people except for that monster Robotnik.  Despair slowly set in as questions flooded my mind.  What if Robotnik was right about taking me to some place Sonic couldn't find me?  How am I ever gonna find Sonic and get back home myself?  As the questions continued, I remembered the photo I had in my pocket from when I was looking through my photo album at home.  Pulling it out and looking at it, it was the one of me and Sonic in the Japanese garden.  As I saw Sonic there with his arm around my shoulder, I swear I could feel his arm on my shoulder right then.  But instead of comforting me, it only brought tears to my eyes. My vision faded as my eyes filled with tears, and before I knew it I was asleep.

I don't know how long I was asleep, but I was awakened with a painful jolt, and I found myself lying sideways in the can.  I'm guessing I had slumped forward in the can while I was sleeping and toppled it.  Having broken out in a cold sweat, I was breathing heavily, trying to calm my pounding heart.  I guess that's why I didn't notice someone knocking on the outside of the canister, saying "Is someone in there?"  Anxious to be let out, but also worried about who might be there, I nervously replied "Y-yes...could you please let me out?"  The voice seemed friendly, however, and a few seconds later the can was opened.  I shut my eyes, thinking I'd be hit with blinding light again, but when I wasn't I opened my eyes and came face-to-face with an echidna with burnt-orange skin, wearing a skirt with a pretty green-and-white diamond pattern on it, and a plain white wrapping around her chest with a thick golden necklace and headband that gleamed in the dim light.  Extending a hand towards me, she said "I'm Tikal...what's your name?"  Taking her hand and pulling myself out of the canister, I replied "I'm Amy...Amy Rose..."  I looked around at the place I was in, and discovered I was in a large room filled with clay pots of various sizes and colors, which was dimly lit by torches that were mounted on large gray stone-block walls.  Now I know I'm not in Kansas anymore.

Naturally, I asked her "I'm not from around here...where am I?"  Tikal replied "You're in the great city of the tribe of Pachacamac, inside our Temple of the Great Jaguar."  This was a lot of information to digest, and I stood there quietly for a moment.  That name sounds vaguely familiar, but where from?  But I soon said "Could you help me escape and find my boyfriend?", showing her the picture of me and Sonic.  Her face fell somewhat as she said "My father said that anyone who helped the prisoner escape would be put to death."  Pausing for a moment with her eyes closed, "I hate to go against my father's wishes, but I hate to see a broken heart more.  I will help you escape and, with luck, we will find your boyfriend."  Somewhat relieved, I then asked "You're very kind.  But how are we going to escape?  I don't look like you or anyone else here...if anyone sees me, they'll know I'm the prisoner."  Tikal stood there for a moment, thinking, then seemed to get an idea, because she walked over to one of the clay pots and opened it.  Reaching inside, she pulled out some kind of powdery, clay-like material which she rubbed between her fingers, leaving dark smudges.  Her face lit up as she said "That's it!  We'll use this red and yellow ocher as a disguise."  She looked at me and her face fell again.  "But your clothing is out of place too.  For this to work, you can't be seen wearing that either.  I think I have the answer, but this might get a bit uncomfortable for both of us."  I nodded.

About ten minutes later, Tikal and I walked out of the large room and through some stone hallway.  I had been smeared from head to toe with the yellow ocher so that my skin was the same color as Tikal's, and I was wearing Tikal's outfit.  Likewise, Tikal had smeared herself with the red ocher and was wearing nothing but a band of red leather tightly wrapped around her chest to flatten it -- she looked like one of those other echidnas I'd seen before.  As we rounded a corner to another hallway, we passed one of those red echidnas, which made my heart start pounding 'cause I worried that he might see through our disguises.  But apparently it was more convincing than I thought, or maybe it was the dim light inside the corridor, because he nodded in acknowledgement at our presence and kept walking.  The light in the hall began to grow brighter as we rounded another corner, and soon enough, we were both outside.  As I squinted my eyes in the bright sunlight, I finally got my chance to look around at this place.  My jaw nearly dropped at what I saw.  This looks like some kind of ancient civilization.  But that means Robotnik must have jumped back in time.  How am I ever gonna get home now?  Tikal could see the storm of mixed emotions in my eyes, and muttered under her breath in a fake low voice, "Stop looking around like that, or you're gonna make people suspicious."  So I kept my eyes straight ahead and my mouth shut as we walked all the way to one of a cluster of huts made of wood and straw for roofs.

Looking around, I soon came to the conclusion that this was Tikal's hut.  She sat down on what looked like a straw mattress and said "I can tell you've got a lot of questions about what happened, so I'll try my best to explain.  We had all gathered together for our monthly offering to the gods, when suddenly in the sky, above the tallest pyramid in our city, appeared some strange floating object, which quickly descended to ground level.  My father, our tribe's leader, interpreted this as a fulfillment of the prophecy that had been foretold for centuries, and everyone, myself included, started bowing in reverence to the strange being that emerged from the floating object.  Never in my life had I been so anxious and yet so scared at the same time.  And when he demanded all the wealth and protection the tribe could offer, we wanted to give it to him.  But when I saw you inside that tall gray pot, I knew he wasn't really a god, because no god of ours would ever trap someone like that.  That's why I went looking for you."

Suddenly I heard footsteps approaching behind me.  I turned around to see one of the male tribe members standing in the doorway, catching his breath, who said, "Tikal, your father has requested to see you immediately.  It's about the prisoner."  Knowing my voice would give me away, I said nothing, and glanced back at Tikal for some sort of suggestion about what to do.  Irritated at my inaction, he said "What are you waiting for?  Come on!", grabbing my arm.  With that I quickly followed him out the door, but when he let go of my arm, some of the pigment on my skin came off, revealing my own skin tone underneath.  That's when I knew I'd been found out.  Before the echidna could even say "Hey, you're not Tikal," I took off running as fast as I could (Tikal's skirt wasn't made for running, that's for sure).  With any luck, I might be able to hide somewhere.  But the echidna was even faster, and I didn't get far before he tackled me to the ground.

Before I knew it, I was standing face to face with the tribe leader, a monster of an echidna if I do say so myself, at the base of the pyramid, surrounded by the rest of the tribe.  Glaring at me with obvious disgust, he ran a thick finger across my skin and rubbed the powder between his fingers.  In a thick voice, he barked "Look at this.  How dare this foreigner, this prisoner, attempt to disguise herself like one of us!"  Ripping the outfit off my body, he said "I'll leave it to the gods to decide your fate."

I was brought inside the pyramid to a lavish throne, where Robotnik was sitting.  At his feet were hundreds of silver and gold trinkets, and at his sides, two fearsome guards dressed in war paint and armed with spears.  The way my arms were being held behind my back made it impossible to try to cover my exposed form, so I just stood there silently with my head hanging down.  The tribe leader approached Robotnik and, with a bow, reverently said "O great and powerful master, your prisoner escaped your control and attempted to disguise herself like one of us.  In your infinite wisdom, I leave you to exact a fitting punishment."  Standing up and stepping right in front of me, Robotnik said "Oh, don't worry, I know exactly what to do," sporting an evil grin that even I didn't think he was capable of.  Tikal's words echoed in my mind...Never in my life had I been so anxious and yet so scared at the same time...

<Sonic's POV>
Standing up and wiping my tear-stained eyes, I looked at Tails and said "You're right, we will find her.  But how?"  He responded "Our best hope right now is to try to recreate that portal that Eggman went through."  I was just about to ask him how he intended to accomplish that when Tails pointed towards the far side of the room and said "Look down there!  It's some kind of robot standing before a control console."  We both dashed over there and the first thing out of my mouth was "Open the same portal you just opened, now!"  The robot gave a look that seemed to say "I can't believe you just asked me that."  I repeated my threat, but the robot wouldn't budge.  I leaped back when a white laser beam suddenly burned a hole through the robot's head and caused it to collapse.  I saw Tails holding a glowing laser pistol, who said "...what?  I took it off one of the robot guards we saw earlier."

With that, Tails stepped before the console and instructed me to stand at the ready in case he could open up the portal again.  A few seconds of button-pressing later, the blue portal shimmered in front of me.  I was hesitant to run through it, for I didn't know what it might do to exposed flesh.  I stuck a finger through it to test the waters, but Tails shouted "I can't hold this thing open for much longer!  GO!"  And with that I flung myself through the portal, unsure of what might be waiting for me on the other side.

For the few seconds that I was passing through the portal, I had a strange sense of vertigo and heard the sound of rushing wind, even though I didn't feel any wind on my skin.  When I stepped out the other side of the portal, I was caught off guard when I felt nothing under my feet, and I fell at least seven stories into a dense jungle below.  Fortunately the trees broke my fall somewhat and I landed without breaking anything.  Standing up and dusting myself off, I tried looking up in the sky at the portal, waiting for Tails to follow me through, but the portal had already disappeared.  I looked around and called out Tails' name, thinking perhaps he made it through before the portal closed, but all I heard was the chirping of birds and buzzing of insects.  So I spent the next half hour or so fighting my way through the underbrush, in the hopes that I'd find some clue to Amy's whereabouts.

I finally stepped into a clearing and what I saw made my jaw drop.  A wide path of neatly-ordered stones ran between large, elevated square platforms on which bonfires blazed.  The path extended to the base of a stepped stone pyramid that towered over everything, with ornate carvings decorating its sides and a huge stone jaguar head at the very top.  I'd only seen this once before, when I was reading a book about ancient cultures.  The realization set in...I'd gone back in time.

I saw some people walking around in front of the pyramid, and thought I would approach them and get some questions answered.  Closer inspection revealed that they were echidnas, like Knuckles, but they looked different, with a dark magenta color instead of red, and with white tips on their dreadlocks.  I asked "Hey, I'm looking for..." but I quickly shut my mouth when they acted surprised and suddenly threatened me with spears.  I backed away and kept my distance, but continued to explore this area in search of Amy, as well as to better understand the place I'd been thrown in.

After an hour of fruitless searching, I'd just about given up.  I sat down on what looked like a bench and looked up at the sky with a sigh.  Here I was, thousands of miles and hundreds of years away from home, with no signs of Amy or Robotnik.  How am I gonna find Amy?  And even if I do find her, how will we ever make it home?  I looked up when I heard footsteps approaching, and saw a she-echidna with burnt-orange skin and a decorated outfit.  I quickly got in a defensive stance, worried about what she might do, but my fears were assuaged when she said "Don't be afraid, I mean you no harm.  You're looking for a girl, right?  With pink skin?"  My eyes lit up when I realized she knew about Amy, and I nodded.  "Follow me," she said.  So I followed her to one of a cluster of wood and straw-roofed huts.

Once inside, I looked around and realized that the she-echidna must live here.  "Forgive me for not introducing myself...my name is Tikal," she said with a smile.  "And you are?"  I responded "Sonic...Sonic the Hedgehog.  Pleased to meet you," as I extended a hand for a handshake.  She looked at my hand with confusion, so I retracted it.  She then began to explain all that had happened to Amy, much to my surprise and horror.  It took me a few seconds to muster up the energy to speak, but I said "You're very kind, Tikal.  Would you help me find Amy?"  She solemnly nodded and said "I don't know where she is or what Robotnik -- that is what you called him, right? -- has done to her, but I promised her I would help bring you two together again, and I keep my promises."
It's been a little while since I published the last chapter to this story, but it's not for lack of effort or ideas...I've simply been busy these past two weeks. That's "busy" with a capital B.

That said, here's the third chapter to "Heavens to Amy." Here we find out just where Robotnik kidnapped Amy, and get a hint about why this story is titled "Heavens to Amy." Yes, this one is a bit lengthier than previous chapters, but again, it was all about ending it on a cliffhanger.

As a footnote, I did some historical research in writing this chapter. The Temple of the Great Jaguar that is mentioned in the story is actually one of five temples in the ancient Mayan city of Tikal, and Pachacamac (which comes from the games, mind you, not me) was a settlement in the Inca empire.

Indiana Jones reference...

nothing much to talk about here, honestly speaking - I mean, its just a good story. I'll again say its over the top, but the conviction that you've given in this particular chapter make me think that maybe that's not the case. The jungle is well captured and the portion from Amy's POV is claustrophobic, and honestly, I had sympathy for the character (even though you and I both know that I don't like SonAmy. Period). Sonic's portrayal was also well done.

The best about this chapter was that it was a no nonsense approach. Very blunt, very serious, and the best part was when Amy is handed over to Robotnik. Although a little more description about the sheer aura of evil of Dr. Robotnik would have made this work really scary. I can imagine how terrifying he must have been (which is cool. Does justice to the role that he plays. At least in this chapter he's done good).

All in all, a decent chapter. Well done.
